Words: Bunny La Roche
On Sunday 8th March, the Fascist BNP were forced to cancel their ‘Battle of Britain’ champagne dinner in South Gloucester. Nick Griffin was due to speak at the event which was meant to fundraise for the Euro-elections. In less than 24 hours notice, 35 people turned out including local Labour MP David Drew, members of the Fire Brigades Union, UCU and NUT who brought banners. Protesters grouped at the pub car park where the Nazis were supposed to meet, and then moved to the venue where the event was booked, to blockade the road. The manager came out and said they had cancelled the booking, and closed the venue. He invited two of the protesters to look at the venue to assure them that the booking had been indeed been cancelled.
BNP thugs in suits were later seen at the meeting point turning others away. Unite Against Fascism protesters were absolutely delighted that they had struck a significant blow to the Fascists, as these BOB meetings are highly publiscised on their website and to their members. It also stopped money being raised for them as well, and will have sown doubt in the minds of the BNPs ‘softer’ members and supporters that maybe the BNP are not as ‘legitimate’ as they claim.
BNP LIES
The BNP then claimed on Monday 9th March, on their website that the meeting had gone ahead. This is an outright lie as Simon Darby BNP candidate for the Euro elections said in the Bristol Evening Post:
“There’s a group of left-wing thugs threatening violence which has led to a fundraising dinner being cancelled and this poor woman from losing trade. We’re in a run-up to an election, we’re contesting every seat in the South West and we’ve every right to hold a meeting. This woman is a member of the community and incidents like this aren’t fair on her, or us.”
The Fascist BNP are obviously rattled by the protest and Nick Griffin and his Fascist cohorts must have been left with more than egg on their faces when they probably had to explain to their wealthier supporters that the meeting was cancelled due to protests from Unite Against Fascism supporters.
But…
According to their website the Battle of Britain roadshow is going to Wrexham and Swansea in the very near future, so lets make sure we stop them there as well.
