The second all day music festival aimed at raising awareness of racial discrimination and celebrating diversity, is to held at a Shropshire college in June.
Organised in conjunction with Shropshire Council, Shropshire Partnership and the Hive music and media centre, Shrewsbury, Love Music, Hate Racism will take place at the London Road campus of Shrewsbury College on Saturday 20 June. Offered as a day of entertainment for the whole family, the event will include live music from 16 national and local bands, circus skills workshops and face painting for young children.
Beth McGowan, music technology lecturer at Shrewsbury College and one of the organisers is looking forward to a successful day. She said: “Shropshire’s black, minority and ethnic group represents just 2% of the county’s 290,000 population. However, since October 2008, statistics show that there have been nearly 90 incidents of racially aggravated crimes and 70 incidents of reported hate crimes¹. Shrewsbury College is the only college in Shropshire to have set up stations at both of its campuses for people to report hate crimes without going to a police station.
“By repeating last year’s successful event to raise awareness of racially motivated violence and to show our support for the cause, we have organised the festival again in 2009. We aim to combine an important message with a fun day out for music lovers of all ages.”
The Shrewsbury College Love Music Hate Racism festival will run from midday until 11pm on Saturday 20 June. Tickets are available through the college on 01743 342322 or online at www.shrewsbury.ac.uk.
