Thousands of mainly young people turned out for LMHR’s carnival in Barnsley on Saturday 1 May, turning the town into a huge Love Music Hate Racism zone.
Atmosphere
On the main stage, chart-toppers Roll Deep were joined by Chipmunk, The Blackout, Reverend and the Makers, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Mumzy Stranger – plus 2-tone legend Neville Staple of The Specials and the Trojan Sound System, as well as local bands. An enthusiastic crowd – with LMHR T-shirts and hoodies prominently on display – kept up the atmosphere that the rain couldn’t dampen.
All over town
The main stage was the focal point for an antiracist celebration that filled the town, with 20 pubs, clubs and venues staging LMHR fringe gigs with a huge variety of music. It was impossible to get more than a few hundred yards without hearing the music streaming out of another festival venue, with packed pubs decked out in LMHR posters and outdoor stages drawing the crowds.

Hi Patrick – UB40 pulled out because their drummer was taken ill. They sent us this statement – really nice comment from Brian Travers as well.
Hi Shelley – glad you enjoyed it!

Hi Jamie – there were lots of photographers out and about on the day, so we’re hoping to get pics sent in. If we get any of the White Bear gig, we’ll post them. Well done for playing your part – the pub gigs were a really special part of the day.
@ everyone – if you’ve got carnival pics or videos, we’d love to see them! Just email us the pics or a youtube link.

Brilliant day. The whole town had a celebratory anti-racist feel to it all day. I saw The Specials at the Leeds Carnival Against The Nazis in 1981 and brilliant to have them in Barnsley last night. And it was particularly good to have thousands chanting against the BNP just a few hundred yards away from where they peddle their filth every Saturday.

Greetings all….Hey Patrick in answer to your question.
First of all can I just apologize on behalf of UB40 and say it was a huge disappointment for us to have to pull out of yesterdays event, we were genuinely deflated at not being able to take part, its been our ‘weekus horribilis’ our drummer got taken ill 2 days before the gig..well 3 days actually but of course we didn’t believe him on the first day and were taking the piss something rotten when he didn’t show for rehearsals but y’know how these things happen every now and then ? Just when you don’t need it, just when some fat nazi rears his ugly head & life comes along and boots you in the taters…I’m not kidding when I say we considered it not only an enormous privilege to be asked but also the most important gig we were to play in 2010. We started in music in the late 70′s playing Rock against Racism shows which became the highlight of every musicians schedule as there’s nothing like listening to great live music with great like minded people. The effect that Rock against Rascism had back in the 70′ and early 80′s was to fundamentally make the National Front ‘persona non gratis’ a laughing stock and their support dwindled away, dragging its knuckles back into the gutter where it belongs…2010 Its time to regroup again and show the BNP that multi cultural 21st century Britain is no place for racist bigots. Thanks to all the guys at LMHR (way too many names to mention BUT Lee our contact deserves a name check, we know how hard he has worked behind the scenes and how much pressure he was under before the show)
‘I can see from the feedback yesterdays gig was a huge success, how could it not be with all those great perfomers doing their thing..I loved reading Daves reply above when he said

Can I also take this opportunity on behalf of UB40 to BIG UP Roll Deep, Chipmunk, The Blackout, Reverend and the Makers, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Mumzy Stranger , Neville Staple of The Specials and the Trojan Sound System, and all the local bands 4KIN BRILLIANT JOB guys..LOVE YOU ALL….just wish we could have been there to witness the day, make some new pals, buy you a beer and hear what you are all dong with the music..
LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM…..XXXX

Hi Jamie – We should have some video for you here, when it’s ready…

Hi there folks
Well pleased with Brian Travers very kind comments. They are much kinder than the, quite frankly, threatening comments posted on the video by members of the BNP.
You know how to vote folks.
Scott Doonican said:
We were going to pull our video down earlier because of the amount of hatemail we’re getting from BNP supporters and in fear of reprisals. However we changed our mind after we got a twitter message from all round top nice bloke, Brian Travers:
“Its a well known fact that Fascists are V easily upset by everything, they dont like each other much either, watch them at pub closing time dont let the hatemail get 2 U,if u think abt it they are exposing themselves, doing exactly what the world expects of Nazis & WE LOVE YA !!!”
What a meganice thing to say – and guess what, the video stays where it is… FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS!
God Bless y’all

Lets be honest. The Blackout were the best act there, everyone pretty much went insane for them!

It was great to see so many people in Barnsley to support such a great event. BS/VD had a brilliant time, and i’m glad Scott chose not to pull our vid now. On reflection, i’m quite pleased the BNP don’t like . . . Job done!!

Morning folks… I’m feeling good this morning, because I know that tomorrow all of the people who have been supporting LMHR will use their vote to keep out the BNP.
In the words of Albert Einstein (a refugee to Britain from the Holocaust – yes that’s right Nick Griffin, the holcaust DID happen!) “The world is a dangerous place to live in: not because of the pople who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”
NOW LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Peace, love and understanding
