Aki Nawaz of hip-hop group Fun-Da-Mental and Nation Records, who is from Bradford, is among those backing the We are Bradford event called to oppose the racist English Defence League on 28 August.
We are Bradford has been called by Bradford Unite Against Fascism and is supported nationally by Unite Against Fascism – LMHR’s sister campaign.
Aki signed the statement supporting the event and took the time out to tell us why he believes it is so important.
For over 40 years we have been plagued by this disease of racism, bigotry, racial attacks and hatred against our communities from various groups – from the National Front to Combat 18 to the British National Party etc – and now it comes in the form of the English Defence League.
On 28 August, Bradford – as a whole community – must lead the way by displaying its opposition to the racist, hatred-filled thugs of the EDL.
Over many years through resistance and protest, Bradford has been at the helm of sending a clear message to these people: “We will struggle against you at every point.” And now we have the opportunity once again to let these people know that Bradford wants to progress into a symbol of hope and unity and not hatred, across all
walks of life.We will prove that Bradford is united against the EDL on 28 August and it will be the beginning of the end of this racist and fascist group. We must come out and make history once again.
