Love Music Hate Racism supporters will gather outside a court in south London on 7 September, when LMHR’s national coordinator Martin Smith faces a serious charge following a demo against the fascist British National Party leader Nick Griffin last year.
Charge denied
Martin, who is also a national officer of our sister campaign Unite Against Fascism, was arrested on the protest outside BBC Television Centre, and has been charged with assaulting a police officer – a serious charge that can lead to a jail sentence. Martin strenuously denies the charge.
The demo on 22 October last year was called by UAF to protest against nazi Nick Griffin’s invitation onto the BBC’s flagship Question Time programme. The demo was backed by LMHR supporters including the legendary Jerry Dammers, who spoke outside Television Centre. Trade unions Unite, PCS, CWU, Bectu, Aslef, TSSA, the Musicians Union and the South East Regional TUC also backed the protest.
Support Martin and the right to protest against fascism
Please join us outside the court to show support for Martin. The case involving a leading antifascist activist could also have implications for other antifascists in future. It is important to stand up for our right to protest against racism and fascism.
Join us: 9am Tuesday 7 September
South Western Magistrates Court, 176a Lavender Hill, London SW11 1JU
The court is just up the road from Clapham Junction station (see map). Nearest tubes: Clapham South and Clapham Common. Bring your friends – and your banners!
