On Friday September 2nd Rich Mix in London’s East End plays host to a celebration of the musician, poet, and activist Gil Scott-Heron. Influenced by soul, jazz, blues and the spoken word, Scott-Heron was one of the few artists to seamlessly mix music and politics; Speaking out against racism and inequality and influencing a whole generation of musicians and fans.
There are better days ahead will pay tribute to his legacy and also celebrate the diverse and multicultural East End.
Headliners on the night include The Peoples Army with long-term LMHR supporter MC Logic one of the freshest talents in UK Hip-Hop at the moment. The Peoples Army aim,in their own words, to:
Travel from city to city…..From country to country expressing righteous words for people who wanna listen…. Lets make it more than words….LETS TAKE ACTION!!! Our Aim is to show and educate with music….with the hope to free the trapped and unconscious mind.
They are joined by Asian Dub Foundation’s Pandit G who will perform a DJ set. A dedicated anti-fascist and political activist Pandit G, along with Asian Dub Foundation, has long spoken out against racism, injustice, and inequality:
The fear that the government and media are spreading – putting asylum-seekers in the same bracket as suspected terrorists – is outrageous. We’ve got to organise against it and do as much as we can to publicise against the racism that’s coming through because the only one who’ll win [otherwise] is the BNP. And the people who suffer from that are not just black people. Whole communities get devastated when fascists come in.
Also performing are London Hip-Hop collective 4i2i. With a massive line-up of Rappers, Producers, Singers, and Musicians, 4i2i will be back in London after getting rave reviews on their European tour. There will be further music from Zana Rose, Jamie Joseph, and Chloe solo acoustic artists from Derbyshire.
Also performing on the night will be poet and activist Zita Holbourne. Zita is a published and award-winning poet, using poetry and spoken word to draw attention to social issues, and is Co-founder and National Co-Chair of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC) UK and campaigns for Equality, Freedom, Justice and Democracy. She is joined by Michael Rosen, a broadcaster, Poet, and former Children’s Laureate. Rosen has worked tirelessly for years promoting education and spreading his love of poetry and verse to both the young and the old.
